His playng is aggressive, more in the style of Joe Venuti than of Django Reinhardt's
partner Stephane Rrappelli. While Grappelli has an elegant "French" feeling about his
playing. Venuti is more earthy, with drysense of humore. Hugh mention that he listened to
Venuti frequentry, and vice versa. but it is difficult to say what effect they had on
each other. As for Grappelli,Hugh mentions That he heard him on record, but did not care
much for his use of higher positions.Hugh prefers to do most of his playing in first
position, moving only occasionally to higher positions for effect.
